Hey guys! My name is Nick and I am currently a 4th year Biochemistry major at Stony Brook University. To find out more about me and my background, feel free to click the “About Me” section above, but all you need to know for right now is that I have a passion for all things fitness and health. This passion began when I was in high school. Back then it was fairly easy to eat healthy and keep a consistent workout schedule, but then I got to college and everything changed. Between the dining hall food, the sleep deprivation, the caffeine addictions, the parties, and now the added complication of on-campus gyms being closed or restricted due to COVID-19, it can seem impossible to stay healthy and fit in college. Well, I’m here to prove that it is in fact possible. How do I know? I’m doing it right now! Here’s how:
Like many of you, I was forced to take a Freshman seminar class, and other than getting an easy A, it was pretty much a complete waste of time. However, we did learn the concept of the 8 dimensions of well-being. Well my brain is too fried to remember 8 things after taking orgo, so I cut those 8 dimensions down to just 4 words. And if that’ still too hard for you, I made them all start with M.
The 4 M words are; Meals, Muscles, Meditation, and Mindset. Or in other words, the four aspects of health that this blog is going to focus on are your nutrition, your physical health, your mental health, and your outlook on the world. And yes, what they all have in common is “your” This blog is going to focus on YOU. Click on the tabs under “Blog” to find out more information about each M word.
The goal of each blog post is to be informative and educational yet also light and funny. I’ll do my best to make sure that it’s all backed up by the latest scientific fitness and nutrition research. However, I assume you don’t enjoy reading pages and pages of sciencey gibberish, so I will do you the favor of paraphrasing the main points and conclusions. I will always cite all the research I use, so if you’re bored in the house, and in the house bored, feel free to read through the research to make sure I’m not lying.
I also want to make sure that I’m posting the most relevant information possible, so if you have any requests on what I should write about or if you just feel like telling me what a great job I’m doing, feel free to use the contact form below for any suggestions, comments, and questions! I also take Venmo…
Lastly, you know I gotta plug my IG, so check me out @seagull_strength for more great fitness related content!
As I may have mentioned once or twice, I am just a college student. Except for what I’ve learned over the years of working out and eating right myself, I am not a professional and do not have any professional training. You should always talk with your doctor, nutritionist, and other professionals to make sure that the workouts and diets you read about in this blog are right for you and your fitness level. Hopefully this blog will help bring new insights on fitness in general, but in the end, each person is unique, and you have to make your own decisions about whether the information you read about in these blogs is something that will work for you. Neither Seagull Strength Blog nor I personally take responsibility for any injuries or health problems that may result from taking the advice in this blog. Be safe and stay healthy!
Okay, so this is where we are: you realized how important nutrition is to changing your weight or simply just being healthy, you figured out how many calories you want to eat and the macro splits that work best for you, and lastly, you have access to a kitchen of some sorts. In my eyes, there are three main steps to meal prepping: planning, cooking, and of course eating! I would say the planning part is the most difficult but if you do that correctly it makes all the other parts so easy.
Read Now!So, you're ready to get serious about working out. You’ve committed a certain amount of days a week to going to the gym and actually lifting weights but now you don’t know how to best maximize your time there. There are many different “splits” out there and it's important to try different ones to see what works best for you. In this blog post, I am going to talk about what I think are the 2 main splits out there; the Bro Split and PPL (push, pull, legs).
Read Now!I've talked a bunch about meditation and its many benefits and I even have 2 guided meditations uploaded on this website. But maybe, just maybe, you don’t like the sound of my soothing and relaxing voice and you would rather try meditating on your own. If that's the case or you're just here to learn about the different types of meditation that you could potentially perform, but never will, just so you can impress your friends on your next Zoom meeting, then you're going to enjoy this!
